The Spanish Enigma is a fast-paced thriller.

David Croft is a well-known art historian, more adept at evaluating pictures than solving mysteries. However he is asked by the manager of Madrid's Prado museum to locate the original of Francisco Goya's controversial and famous painting, "The Nude Maja". So when he takes on the job, he does not bargain for the murders, conspiracies, and betrayals that await him. Around this time, he also falls in love with Susan Portman, the daughter of James Dupont Portman III, renowned financier and the owner of Le Rive Gauche Gallerie d'Art. Staying alive soon becomes the greatest challenge that he has ever faced.

Croft finds out that an international terrorist organization, called the ETA, is after the painting. But this only leads to further mystery, as he now also has to find out why these terrorists are after the painting. But can Croft solve the mystery and find the culprits in time to save himself, and more importantly his lover, from those trying to get the painting? Can Croft succeed in recovering the lost Goya?

Joseph Steven depicts the murky side of the art world, which is clouded by politics. From art thieves to international terrorism, the novel provides a roller coaster ride for the reader. The sheer amount of research and the extensive detail that is cleverly interwoven into the text gives it a depth and credibility that takes it to a league that is above regular potboilers.

A fast-paced thriller, The Spanish Enigma, never gives the impression that it is a debut novel. Similar in theme, though completely different and refreshing in its execution, to the highly successful Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, it succeeds in grabbing the attention of the reader from the first line, and keeps him riveted to his seat till the last line is read.
